My first reaction to The IT Crowd was that I’ve seen this formula before. An Irish guy, a guy with funny hair, and a high-strung woman. Linehan’s Black Books, anyone? But don’t knock it if the formula works. Roy (Chris O’Dowd) and Moss (Richard Ayoade) are the IT guys at Reynholm Industries, some company that does who knows what. In stark contrast to the cubicles upstairs, their basement room looks like it was shot in the basement apartment of a couple nerds–wood paneling, toys and computer hardware everywhere.
When they’re assigned a new manager, business go-getter Jen Barber (Katherine Parkinson), who knows nothing about computers, Roy and Moss unleash a rebellion. Too bad Moss is totally cluesless and Roy secures himself a head injury that renders him unconscious. Episode 2 has the same result, plus setting the office on fire.
Personally, in the first two episodes, I see all the well-crafted magic that made season 1 of Black Books such a treat utilized here. Well deserved that it should win so many BAFTAs. If you’re in New York, go see Chris O’Dowd on Broadway as Lenny in Of Mice and Men.
