Johnny Flynn is not only a British actor, but also a well-known musician. He is the frontman for Johnny Flynn & the Sussex Wit. He also wrote the theme song to Detectorists. As an actor, he’s often credited as Joe Flynn.
In Scrotal Recall (2014), Johnny Flynn plays Dylan, who has just been diagnosed with chlamydia and must now track down every girl he’s had a relationship with to let them know the bad news. Dylan is a romantic, but not a very successful one, all the more at obstacle now that he has an STD.
In Song One (2014), Franny (Anne Hathaway) returns home after her brother is put into a coma by an accident. She reads his journal and visits the places he’s been, and she meets the musician that her brother is obsessed with, James Forester. And the love story begins.
Johnny Flynn currently has four albums out: A Larum, Been Listening, A Film Score of a Bag of Hammers, and Country Mile. I was lucky enough to see him perform in Brooklyn in Sept. 23, 2013. Here’s a video of one of my favorite songs, “Tickle me Pink.” The keyboard player is his sister.
In addition to doing his own music, Johnny Flynn also wrote and performed the theme song to the new comedy Detectorists (2014), starring MacKenzie Crook and Toby Jones. Flynn even appears as a cameo in one episode, playing his song, as a character called Johnny Piper.
