To celebrate the 100th year of Einstein’s theory of General Relativity, Professor Brian Cox and comedian Robin Ince, co-hosts of The Infinite Monkey Cage, host a two-part radio documentary on the theory.
This documentary includes guests like cosmologist Sean Carroll, who you may remember from season 12 of The Infinite Monkey Cage as the science adviser on the movie Thor. There is also a panel game section between comedian Dara O Briain (who has a BSC in physics and mathematics), comedian Ben Miller (who has made it halfway through a physics PhD program), and comedian Richard Branch (who has a PhD in physics), as they each try to explain General Relativity in under a minute, getting buzzed out by the others according to the rules of Just a Minute.
In this documentary, we learn about what General Relativity is, that it is about the curvature of space-time, and that Newton’s definition of gravity as a force doesn’t really work (for example with Mercury’s orbit). According to the theory, when you feel gravity, you’re feeling the geometry of the universe.
Part two takes us to the Lovell Telescope in Cheshire where Robin gets vertigo and Brian tries to defend his decision for shooting a music video here when he was in the rock band D:Ream.
