I started watching Getting On because it was co-written by and co-stars Jo Brand, who I think is very funny. I’d heard from Tears of a Clown that Brand had worked in health, so I was interested to see what she had to say about the industry. Along with The Thick of It‘s Joanna Scanlan and A Young Doctor’s Notebook‘s Vicki Pepperdine, Brand has created a fantastically dark comedy about working in a geriatric ward for women. The hues are blues and greens, the jokes are quick and quiet, and the bureaucratic nonsense rings true. While each episode focuses on a couple patients, the conflicts mainly arise from hospital administration and the nurses’ own incompetency. Did I mention it’s directed by Doctor Who‘s Peter Capaldi? I’ll definitely be watching more. Look for a full review in the near future.
There is also an American version starring Laurie Metcalf that I haven’t seen yet.
Teaser posts are reviews based on just the first episode.
