Will Proudfoot (Bill Milner) is a good little boy with a religious mother (Jessica Hynes) who isn’t even allowed to watch television and movies. What a perfect hobby for him, then, to be an amateur filmmaker. With the help of Lee (Will Poulter–the River Phoenix to Milner’s Wil Wheaton), the naughtiest kid at school, Will Proudfoot sets out to make the most epic action/adventure film of the 80s. But, as expected, more kids find out, and everybody wants their stamp on the project, causing a rift between the two young filmmakers, and all done while keeping it a secret from Will’s mom and from Lee’s brother whose camera they lifted.
Son of Rambow (2007) is an excellent coming-of-age film for all ages, directed by Garth Jennings, just after he did The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. It is based on his own experiences, and therefor better than his rendition of H2G2. It’s a bit of a feel-good version of Be Kind Rewind for kids, or like all those movies where very young kids try to start their own band. Also, keep your eyes peeled for celebrity cameos in the classroom: direct Edgar Wright (Wright also appears in H2G2) as the metals teacher, Friday Night Dinner‘s Paul Ritter as the geography teacher, and comedian Adam Buxton as the chemistry teacher.
